Welcomers (Sidesmen/women)

Sidesmen and women are key members of a church's team as they provide a welcome to those coming into a church; regular and stranger alike.

People are usually nominated/seconded as sidesmen and women and approved at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting. The team are usually formally admitted in to their role by the clergy and Churchwardens during a service the week after the Archdeacon's (Deanery) Visitation.

As well as being the welcomers, sidesmen/women also have legal duties under church law as highlighted in this useful guidance used by Chorley, St James
