Could you stand for General Synod?

New members of the General Synod are being elected this year, and people of all ages are invited to put themselves forward.

The General Synod is the Church of England's national governing body. This page tells you more about what the structure and you can watch this video too.

The nominations stage of the elections process is now open. Those elected will serve for five years. Members include bishops, clergy, and lay people.

We are promoting this opportunity to stand in Parish Update ebulletin, on our Diocesan website and on our social media channels.

Being a member of the General Synod, whatever age you are, is a great opportunity to represent your church, community, and Diocese at a national level. Young people are particularly encouraged to get involved.

Most people who regularly attend a Church of England church are likely to be eligible to stand as a lay member.

We also want candidates from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and church traditions. We especially encourage people from groups that are currently underrepresented to consider standing.

If you would like to stand, please read the relevant 'Qualifications of Candidates' document on this page of the Diocesan website to check if you are eligible.

Deanery Synod members will have received instructions on how to nominate themselves. Not on Deanery Synod? You will need to complete a nomination form (on the website with full nomination rules).

The nomination period runs from August 14 to September 7. Nominations after 5pm on 7 September will not be considered.
