Recognition for Chaplaincy Team at a key County NHS Foundation Trust

The Chaplaincy Team at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been named as a finalist in the 'Living Our Values' category of the Trust's 'Our People Awards 2026'.

Selected from almost 400 nominations submitted across 12 award categories, the team (some members are pictured with Bishop Joe on a recent visit he made there) has been recognised for its outstanding contribution to the spiritual, emotional and pastoral wellbeing of patients, families and NHS staff across the Trust.

Led by Rev Martin McDonald, the chaplaincy team was nominated for the way it exemplifies the Trust's values through compassionate, inclusive and person-centred care.

The nomination praised the team's unwavering support for people at some of the most difficult moments of their lives, including those facing critical illness, bereavement and end-of-life care.

The citation also highlighted the team's vital role in supporting NHS colleagues, providing emotional and spiritual care following traumatic incidents, patient deaths and periods of heightened pressure. Staff described the chaplaincy service as an important source of resilience and wellbeing.

A particular strength of the team is its commitment to inclusion. Throughout the year, chaplains work closely with staff and local faith communities to recognise and support religious and cultural observances, including Ramadan, Eid, Christmas, Easter, Diwali, Vaisakhi and Passover, helping to foster understanding and belonging across the Trust.

Commenting on the achievement, Rev Martin McDonald, Lead Chaplain at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, said he was delighted that the team's dedication and service had been recognised through a place on the shortlist.

The winners of the Our People Awards 2026 will be announced at a ceremony in Preston on Friday, October 9.
